Character Information
Name: The Knight (Their accepted name is the Knight, but they don’t actually have a name given to them. The Hollow Knight of the game’s title refers to their older sibling, not the protagonist themselves.)
Series: Hollow Knight
Appearance: here!
Age: Left ambiguous.
Canon Point: Post-’Dream No More’ ending.
Canon History:
(The wiki doesn't have a concrete history since the game's story is exploratory and major plot points can be discovered in variable order (and many bosses can be skipped altogether). Sorry!)

Once upon a time, there was a kingdom called Hallownest; it was raised from nothing by the Pale King, a monarch radiant and wise. It was grand and glorious, before a plague swept it, and as quickly as it had risen to fame and fortune it crumbled to dust and ruin.

And before that, there was no kingdom, but a collective of bugs that basked in hypnotic light. Before the Pale King, there was the Radiance, and she unified all bugs at the cost of their higher minds.

To understand the Knight’s origins, it must be understood that the Pale King tore the throne from Radiance, casting her far into the dreams from which she was born, usurping her territory to establish a kingdom of his own. He instilled order and uplifted bugs to far beyond their normal capacities, using his sharp intelligence and charisma to bend bugs to his will. But traces of her remained, though those who had once worshipped her forgot her, and when she came raging back to reclaim what she viewed as rightfully hers, she crawled back in through the dreams of Hallownest’s citizens and brought down a plague that warped body and mind.

Desperate to save his crumbling kingdom, the King dug deep and found a source of possible salvation. From the Abyss, the darkness deep under Hallownest, ancient beyond measuring, he instilled life into emptiness. He bound it in bone-white masks and created empty children whose only purpose was to trap that ancient light and the plague that came with it into a vessel that had no mind to break, could feel no pain, could never give voice to their suffering.

The Knight was one of those children, made by the thousands and thrown away as the King feverishly tried to create a vessel without impurity - without a soul. Finding his perfect vessel - the Hollow Knight - he took it away from the abyss and sealed Radiance within it, bargaining with three powerful bugs to form dreaming seals on his vessel’s prison so that Radiance would never break free. These three were the Dreamers, serving as extra protection so that nobody could access the vault that held the Hollow Knight.

And he sealed the door to the Abyss, heedless that his desperate experiments yet lived despite his best efforts. It is here, in the abyss, among the shattered remains of the dead, that the Knight’s story begins.

They climbed out of darkness; they found a way to escape the pit that was at once their birthplace and a graveyard. They left the kingdom entirely, to have their own adventures, and may never have returned if they hadn’t heard the desperate calls of the Hollow Knight - their eldest sibling. The infection, after countless years, was breaking free. They were needed; they came home.

They found a ruined kingdom where the dead walked and friendly faces were few and far between, but they persevered. They fought their way down, deep into the earth, to discover their origins and draw power from their birthplace - and climbed back up; they found the Dreamers and destroyed them to break the seals that held the vault shut. They entered the vault defeated their sibling, and dove into their dream; they fought the source of Hallownest’s suffering, the Radiance, still trying to break free.

With their newfound power, they chased the Radiance through dreams, until she could run no more; they brought darkness to her, and the Abyss dragged her down. Hallownest was finally at rest, dark and quiet once more; and with their purpose fulfilled, they abandoned their physical form, disappearing back into darkness. All that was left of them after the final battle was their mask, cracked cleanly in half;

and then, after that, a storyteller pulled them back out of darkness, and gave them form again.

Canon Personality:
Despite the difficult circumstances of their creation and their obligation to fight to protect themselves in a hostile world, the Knight is compassionate and gentle; they can rescue several NPCs throughout the game without attacking them, and any non-hostile NPC automatically brings up a ‘listen’ prompt. At one point in the game, if they stop to listen to one of the NPCs before killing a Dreamer, he asks them why they hesitate and tells them that ‘mercy is a fine thing’ and to be brave; the choice has already been made, and they should go ahead with what they came to do.

This compassion applies to the memory ghosts they begin to see after obtaining the Dream Nail, too; they’re willing to sit and listen to a ghostly singer, play-fight with a long-dead guardian of the royal gardens, and duel to bring a measure of peace to a warrior who died alone and forgotten far under the earth.

The Knight goes out of their way to be nice to others, and to help with what they can, even when they know they have another purpose. They can go out of their way to give someone a flower, go on a difficult journey to deliver a mourner’s last gift to the grave of her dead lover, spare someone who begs to die so that they can begin a new life, help an old bug discover that he’s not the last of his kind, and even when some characters attack them, they only retaliate to defend themselves and not to harm or kill.
The Knight has learned mercy, and never kills anyone that they could spare instead; this is demonstrated through boss battles where they spare others after defeating them, and in one unique case a fight where they can’t even be damaged by their opponent.

The Knight is intelligent, curious and a good listener, and seems to have some skill in writing, reading and drawing. They diligently fill out maps as they buy them, draw little doodles to mark particularly important spots, and can read many of the signs, graves and other sigils scattered around Hallownest. They never seem to show confusion or hesitation about being given information; they simply absorb it, to the point that other characters are comfortable about talking to them and remark on their voicelessness as ‘stoic’.

When given the opportunity to read minds, they can sometimes mind-read dream-sensitive bugs who will remark on how ‘you’re more curious than you look’ and asked what they’re doing by ‘poking around inside a dusty old mind like mine’. The Dream Nail is a tool to find secrets, and the Knight is curious enough all by themselves to seek them out. They also find and straight up eat or take several things without hesitating (like a lump of crystal, a suspicious fruit, a cloak off a dead sibling) and routinely pick up anything that shines, even if it happens to be near a dead body or in the guts of a creature.

The Knight seems to be respectful and polite in the presence of others; when in the starting town above Hallownest or in the presence of certain characters, they slow to a walk automatically.

The Knight is determined and holds firm to their purpose; nothing slows them down for long. Despite the difficulties of their journey and the wilds beyond, they both left the kingdom to have their own adventures and came back to it when they were needed. They face all manner of trouble without hesitation; other characters remark on their mental fortitude several times, especially when facing their origins and the burdens of the kingdom’s past, and how they’re strong for one so small. One character even remarks that “Always the smallest creatures that attempts the largest things.

Personality Shifts: N/A
Abilities:

Soul Extraction
Living things contain an energy that fuels dreams and will. The Knight can siphon off some of that energy for their own use through bleeding it from them via combat, or by harmlessly skimming it from them by using the Dream Nail. Once they have a reservoir of this energy, they can use it to heal their own injuries.

Combat Proficiency
The Knight is skilled at combat with a sword-type weapon, to the point they're able to master special weapon arts quickly.

Shadow Body
The Knight has a body made of abyssal material, rather than conventional flesh and blood. Their body is malleable and can absorb and consume small things, if they want it to; impacts will disrupt their body’s solidity as they temporarily lose form, but heal over without a trace seconds later. When cut, they ‘bleed’ shadow for a little while before the wound seals; when critically injured, they bleed shadow constantly into the air, and their movements are more sluggish.

Falling from great heights doesn’t seem to affect them. They’re very durable. Upon death, their mask cracks open and falls off as the consciousness escapes, leaving behind a Shade - a remnant of themselves that they need to absorb to make themselves whole again upon reforming somewhere else. The Shade can be seen, but cannot be used by anyone except the Knight.

Vessel
The Knight, like their unfortunate siblings, was created for a singular purpose - the ability to contain an infection that made its home in dreams. If needed, the Knight can perform a version of this task by taking nightmares and other supernatural phenomena into itself, containing it for a limited amount of time. The containment is imperfect, however, and after a week or so the Knight will begin growing to attempt to contain the foreign material inside of it. They will begin to act erratically in accordance to whatever they sealed inside themselves.

They can release whatever they contained at any time - usually with only slight damage to themselves - but in advanced stages, this usually results in death as the infection tears its way out violently.

Since they can consume physical things and make those abilities parts of themselves, they could theoretically do this for more physical sicknesses too, if they were taught what to look for.

- Isma’s Tear
“Fruit formed from a single hardened tear.”
A fruit the Knight ate that made them acid-proof. Though water can hold other hazards for them, the effects of this consumed item repels acid entirely in a small barrier around them.

- Crystal Heart
“The energy core of an old mining golem, fashioned around a potent crystal.”
A crystal core that the Knight consumed. They can focus light energy within themselves to blast forward recklessly like a rocket in a straight line, ignoring gravity until they hit something and stop. To use this ability more than once a day, they have to sun themselves for a few hours to gather more light and re-focus mentally, as being propelled forward at high speeds with no safety gear is incredibly disorienting.

- Dream Nail focus
A metal focus item, carved with a strange pattern. It glows slightly in the dark. When the Knight focuses their will through it, it forms the Dream Nail, a tool that can be used to read the last thoughts of the dead and convey the surface thoughts of living creatures. Holding it allows the wielder to see supernatural phenomena more easily.

In some cases, it can even be used to cut a way into someone’s dream, allowing the Knight to gain entry.

Void Heart
“An emptiness that was hidden within, now unconstrained. Unifies the void under the bearer's will.”
An absorbed charm that represents the recognition of the Abyss, a place of ancient shadows. Doesn’t do much in this world, but may read strangely to those attuned to the supernatural; the Knight is more like an absence than a presence, a gap in magical and psychic senses.

Inventory:

- Pure Nail
“The ultimate weapon of Hallownest. Crafted to perfection, this ancient nail reveals its true form.”
A traditional weapon of Hallownest, and the Knight’s primary weapon. Sharp and pointy.

- Shade Cloak
“Cloak formed from the substance of the Abyss.”
A lightweight cloak that makes the bearer faster. Allows the Knight to make quick dashes across ground or air, ignoring gravity briefly. Hides the user in shadow for a brief amount of time when they dash, causing enemies to potentially lose track of them.

- Mantis Claw
“Claw carved from bone.”
Hooks that allow the user to cling to walls and other rough surfaces where a hook can reasonably gain purchase.

- Monarch Wings
“Wings of ethereal matter that shimmer in the darkness.”
A set of wings that allow the bearer to jump higher than they would normally. They aren’t significantly powerful - with them, the Knight would be able to jump a significant way up a tree trunk or clean over a ruined wall, but that’s about all.

- Wayward Compass charm
A round charm that resembles the points of a compass. When in the presence of a map, the charm whispers the relative location to the bearer, allowing them to orient themselves on a map more easily.

- Map of Hallownest
A map.

-Quill
A quill made from the feather of some foreign creature. Can hold ink.

All items are soaked, but not being advanced technology (and in some cases clothes), they can be hung out to dry with no harm done to their purpose.

Except the map. The map is pretty much useless.
